One of the things that I love the most in the world is antiques. There is something that is just quietly dignified about them when you see them. They come in forms of iron or wood; they could even be big and small. Each comes with its own delightful charms that are sure to enthrall and captivate antique lovers.
However, when you are looking to invest in antiques, it would be important to put a cap on your enthrallment and captivation. When it comes to opening the purse strings and choosing antique pieces, you need to guard your feelings well. It is not surprising in the least that there are fake antiques that are going around in the market.
Why wouldn’t it? There is a lot of money that is to be made of antiques since they’re worth so much. One of the first pieces of antique that I bought with my own money turned out to be counterfeit—much to my endless chagrin. Since then, I’ve decided to really refine my process for choosing and buying antiques. I wanted to share what I’ve learned so far:
Go with sources you can trust
In the world we have now, you will always have choices. There will be online stores, physical stores, and even catalogues that offer you their pieces. After the debacle I experienced, I now only go through channels that I can trust.
Learn to inspect
Another way you can be sure that the pieces that you are looking for are legit, you need to learn how to spot fakes yourself. There are actually classes that you can take. Visit your local museums to see if they offer any tutorials or seminars about it. If not, you can always go online and join groups on social media. They will usually have the leads and connections toward spotting authentic pieces.
Price is not everything
Antiques actually come in a myriad of prices. They aren’t just in the higher end of purchases. There are actually antiques that don’t cost much but are genuine. It is the location where you find them that makes the difference. Don’t be blinded by the high price and don’t limit yourself to establishments that sell antiques for a living. When you see or hear about flea markets, you should go. There are gems there waiting to be discovered.
Antiques are a joy to have. They are an ever present reminder that there are those that have gone before you and left you something special to find. Antiques are also a great way to feel connected to those who have passed on which is why it is so disheartening to realize that what you purchased is a fake.
So if you are in the market to add pieces of antique to your collection or your home, please guard your feelings accordingly. If there was anything that you shouldn’t impulse buy or use your feelings to decide on a purchase, it would have to be antiques.
